Have you heard of Polymetetric time signatures? No, it's not about time traveling (which was my thought the first time I learned about this term).
It's something really fascinating in music theory and something you have probably already heard!
You know your 4/4 beat signature, right? That's one bar filled with 4 x 4th notes. Here is an example:
Pretty straightforward. As indicated by grey lines this bar is also split into 16 x 16th notes.
What if I told you that your time signature could also be something odd that doesn't fall into this grid of 16 x 16th notes?
It could be just 7/16th for example.
Now here is the kicker: This odd time signature can only be for say a percussion or synth line while everything else is still 16/16 or 4/4.
Check this out:
Now this is, it will only loop on a 7-bar pattern, but if you leave it running for the duration of your song - no one will ever notice that it's kinda doing its own thing!
The reason I bring this polymetric thing up is actually quite simple: It creates a very intriguing hypnotic rhythm. The listener will notice that it has its movement and pattern, that repeats but not with the rest of the arrangement.
Using polymeters is very common in techno creating groovy patterns that sound interesting, ever-changing, and constantly changing.
In the example above you see a 7/16 time signature, but 5/16, 3/17, and 12/16 all have their special vibe.
So, for this week's sample pack, I have a few sequences for you in different time signatures. Just play them together with a 4/4 kick drum and you will immediately know what I mean.
Also, you'll find a few MIDIs to try out on your own.
Remember, these things never will loop with the rest of the song, so you need to copy them and may need to place them by hand.
